May 25, 2012

Box Score

MALIBU, Calif. - The 20th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 4-0 decision to Pepperdine University in the series opener Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

With the loss, the Toreros fall to 39-14 overall and fall to 14-8 in the WCC. With the win, the Waves improve to 33-20 overall and move to 15-7 in the WCC.

Pepperdine was able to take advantage of a few USD miscues and were able to push across a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning on a James Grandpre RBI fielder's choice and a USD fielding error, to give the home team a 2-0 lead.

The Waves then scored the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Joe Sever fouled out to the first baseman, which allowed Matt Gelalich to tag from third and score the first run. The final run came on a Sam Meyer RBI single to put the game at its final of 4-0.

Offensively for the Toreros, Connor Joe and Jon Hotta were the lone USD players to record a hit.

Paul Sewald (8-3) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros as he allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work. Pepperdine's Jon Mascot (6-5) was credited with the win, as he allowed no runs on two hits in a complete game shutout.

The Toreros and Waves will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m., as they continue this three game series at Eddy D Field Stadium.
