Three-Run Eighth Lifts USD to Victory over UCI

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 18th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a seven-game winning streak for UC Irvine with a 4-1 non-conference win at Cunningham Stadium.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 37-11 overall, and run their winning streak to four. With the loss, the Anteaters fall to 27-18 overall and saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end.

With the score knotted at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, the USD offense went to work. AJ Robinson got things started with a walk, and he moved to second on a Austin Bailey single to right field. Kris Bryant then launched a run-scoring double to left field, which scored Robinson, to give USD the lead. Andrew Daniel then pushed across the next run with a RBI single through the left side. Corey LeVier was then intentionally walked to load the bases, and Bryan Haar drove in the final run of the game on a sacrifice fly to center field to put the game at its final of 4-1.

Irvine was able to get on the scoreboard first, as they scored one run on a DJ Crumlich RBI single to give UCI a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning.

USD then answered right back in he bottom half of the fifth, as they pushed across one run on a Robinson RBI ground out, which scored Dillon Haupt, who had singled, to move the score to 1-1.

Offensively for the Toreros, Bailey, Bryant, Daniel, LeVier, Haupt and Louie Lechich all recorded one hit a piece to give the Toreros their six hits on the afternoon.

James Pazos (5-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 1.1 innings of work. UCI's Mitch Merten (1-2) was saddled with the loss, as he allowed three runs on three hits in 2.1 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they welcome Loyola Marymount University to Cunningham Stadium for a 3 p.m. WCC game.
