Sewald and Pazos Taken in Second Day of MLB Draft

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Both senior right-handed pitcher Paul Sewald and junior left-handed pitcher James Pazos of the University of San Diego baseball team were drafted in the first day of the Major League Baseball Draft. Sewald was selected in the 10th round by the New York Mets, while Pazos was taken in the 13th round by the New York Yankees.

Sewald, a 6-2 senior right-handed pitcher from Las Vegas, Nev., posted an overall record of 8-4, while bolstering an ERA of 3.09. Sewald recorded a team-leading and career-high 75 strikeouts, while only issuing 27 walks and holding opponents to a .234 batting average. In WCC action, Sewald posted a record of 6-2, and had an ERA of 3.51 en route to a first-team All-WCC distinction.

Pazos, a 6-3 junior left-handed pitcher from Gilbert, Ariz., had his best season in a Torero uniform. Mainly used on the back end of the pitching staff, Pazos has posted a 5-1 overall record, with four saves and bolstered an impressive ERA of 2.14. Pazos pitched a total of 63.0 innings, while striking out 63 batters, and only issuing 21 walks in 29 appearances this season. In WCC action, Pazos posted a 1.42 ERA and had three saves in 25.1 innings of work, en route to a first-team All-WCC distinction.
