SAN DIEGO, Calif- The University of San Diego women's soccer team (3-6-0) lost a heart-breaking 3-2 match to the USC Trojans (3-3-1) Friday evening after allowing the game-winning goal with just 22 seconds remaining.
The Toreros struck first in the 26th minute when sophomore midfielder Mariah Butera found the back of the net after a Torero shot had bounced off the post. It was the second goal against the Trojans this season for Butera.
The Toreros extended their lead in the 40th minute when senior midfielder Sierra Ferreira finished a Kelley McCloskey corner kick giving the Toreros a 2-0 advantage, a lead they held going into halftime.
The Trojans were able to get on the board in the 52nd minute when Jordan Marada converted a Haley Boysen assist from 25 yards out.
The Trojans Elizabeth Eddy scored the equalizer in the 86th minute when she took advantage of a loose ball right in front of the goal.
USC wasn't done as they kept the pressure on the Torero defense as the clock winded down. The Trojans Samantha Johnson found the back of the net off a Marada assist with only 22 seconds remaining on the clock.
The match was a tale of two halves with the Trojans outshooting the Toreros 12-4 in the second half (18-8 overall) and attempting five corners to the Toreros zero.
Freshman goalkeeper McKenna Tollack was saddled with the loss despite having five saves. Her counterpart, Caroline Stanley, was credited with the win and recorded two saves.
The Toreros look to get back in the win column next Friday when they take on No. 20 Long Beach State (5-3-0) on the road at 7:00 p.m.
