LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Sophomore midfielder Mariah Butera's goal in the 84th minute of action propelled the University of San Diego women's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference win over USC in the final match of the USC Futbol Classic Sunday afternoon at McAllister Field.
The Trojans (2-3-0) got on the scoreboard first, as Jordan Maranda fired off a shot in the 8th minute of action to the upper right corner and the was able to get into the back of the net to give USC a 1-0 lead.
San Diego (3-3-0) then answered back in the 22nd minute of action, as Emily Dillon centered a pass to Sierra Ferreira, who in turn hit a rocket shot to the near post, evening the score at 1-1.
Then in the 84th minute of action, Dillon again sent a cross near the goal, and this time is was Mariah Butera who was there to finish off the ball giving the Toreros a 2-1 victory.
USC outshot the Toreros, 21-8, and USD was out cornered 3-2.
McKenna Tollack picked up the win in goal for the Toreros as she allowed one goal and recorded seven saves. USC's Caroline Stanley was saddled with the loss in goal for the Trojans as she allowed two goals and recorded three saves.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday when they remain on the road and take on Duke University in a 4 p.m. (PT) non-conference match.
