Late Rally Falls Short in Loss to Matadors

April 30, 2013

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team put on a late rally scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough, as Cal State Northridge held on to claim a 6-4 non-conference win Tuesday evening.

With the Toreros trailing 6-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth, San Diego didn't just quit, they put up a fight. AJ Robinson got things started as he singled to right field and moved to second on a Connor Joe ground out to the shortstop. Logan Davis then singled through the right side, which moved Robinson to third. Ben Wylly then was hit by a pitch, and Louie Lechich then unleashed his first home run of the season, a three-run blast over the right field fence, to move the score to 6-4. USD could not manage any more offense however, as the game ended with a 6-4 final score.

The Matadors and Toreros were engaged in a pitchers dual at first, as it was a perfect game for both starting pitchers, until the top of the fourth inning happened. The Matadors finally got to USD starter Dylan Covey, as he surrendered six runs, five earned, in the frame. The CSUN runs came on Goossen-Brown two-run double to left field, a Mercado RBI single, a Colantono sacrifice fly, a Osuna RBI single and a USD fielding error to give the visitors a 6-0 lead.

San Diego was no-hit through the first seven innings, until AJ Robinson broke that up with a single to right field. The Toreros did manage to score a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a Logan Davis RBI single to round off the USD scoring.

Robinson led the Torero offense, as he went 2-for-3 with one run scored, while Lechich went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.

Covey (3-4) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed six runs, five earned, on three hits in 3.0 innings of work. CSUN's Rutherford (1-1) picked up the win, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 7.0 innings of work. Goosen-Brown picked up his eighth save of the season, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 0.1 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they resume West Coast Conference play with a 3 p.m. game at Saint Mary's College.
