LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 23rd-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (18-11, 4-3 WCC) dropped their series opener, 4-0, to Loyola Marymount University Friday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Paige Stadium.
The Lions (15-14, 6-4 WCC) got on the scoreboard first, as they managed take advantage of a Torero error to score one run in the bottom of the second inning. The LUM run came after Chris Barnett reached on a fielding error to load the bases with one out, and David Edwards grounded out to the second baseman, allowing one unearned run to cross the plate to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
After LMU took a 2-0 lead with a RBI single by Tanner Donnels in the bottom of the third inning, the Lions would score a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to round off their scoring for the day.
USD's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the fifth inning, as Louie Lechich got things started with a single to right field. Two batters later, Logan Davis kept things going, as he singled through the right side to move Lechich to third. But USD could not push across a run, leaving the score at 4-0.
Offensively for the Toreros, six different players recorded one hit each, with Austin Green recoding a double.
Michael Wagner (1-3) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits in 6.0 innings of work. LMU's Colin Welmon (5-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Lions, as he allowed no runs on six hits in 8.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m., as they resume this 3-game series with the Lions at Paige Stadium.
