Toreros Drop Wild Offensive Shootout to UNLV, 12-10

May 6, 2013

Box Score

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Junior All-American third baseman, and Las Vegas, Nev. native, Kris Bryant had a great home coming, as he hit two more home runs, but it wasn't enough, as the University of San Diego baseball team dropped a wild 12-10 decision to UNLV Monday afternoon in a non-conference game at Wilson Stadium.

The Toreros (28-21) wasted no time in scoring as they pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Bryant led off the game with a single to right field, and the UNLV right fielder then bobbled the ball, allowing Bryant to advance to second. Two batters later, Dillon Haupt unleashed his 10th home run of the season, a two run blast to dead centerfield, giving USD the early 2-0 lead.

UNLV (31-17) then answered right back in the bottom half of the first inning, scoring three runs. The Rebels looked to the long ball as well, as a two-run blast from Brendon Bayardi and a Patrick Armstrong solo shot gave the home team a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the second inning, USD kept the offensive showdown going, as they scored three runs on two hits. AJ Robinson got things going with a triple down the right field line. Chris Woolley then drove in Robinson with a sacrifice fly to center field. Louie Lechich then kept things going when he reached on what appeared to be a hit to the second baseman, as the ball took a bad hop in front of him. However the play was ruled an error on the second baseman. Nonetheless, Bryant stepped to the plate and hit his first of two home runs on the day, a two-run blast to dead centerfield to give USD a 5-3 advantage.

The wildness then continued, as UNLV scored three runs in the bottom of the second, while USD scored three in the third, and UNLV mirrored those three runs with three in the bottom of the third to move the score to 8-8.

Then the two teams finally had a scoreless inning in the fourth. Then the Rebels scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and USD would then score one run in the seventh on a Connor Joe solo home run, and one in the ninth on a Bryant solo home run to put the game at its final of 12-10.

Offensively for the Toreros, Bryant led the way as he went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI. Haupt also had a good day at the plate, as he went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.

Troy Conyers (1-1) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in 0.2 innings of work. UNLV's John Richy (5-4) picked up the win for the Rebels, as he allowed two runs on four hits in 6.2 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they host the University of Portland in a 6 p.m. WCC game at Fowler Park.
