SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's swim team had an early tune up Friday afternoon in a pentathlon against San Diego State at the USD Sports Center Pool. The meet was the first of the season for both squads and gave each team their first chance to get a lot of swimming in in a semi-competitive environment. While the meet was more of a structured scrimmage, SDSU wound up on top by a score of 18-6. The first five events of the day- 100 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breast, 200 IM- were combined to make up the pentathlon, with points being allotted accordingly. The meet concluded with a set of sprints in the 50 fly, 50 back, 50 breast, and 50 free.

The Toreros turned in a number of strong swims on the day, especially by their large crop of young swimmers, some getting their first taste of collegiate swimming. Freshman Kelsey Leonard posted the Toreros' top time in the 100 freestyle, coming in at 54.31. Right behind her was Jackie Taylor at 54.38 and Taylor Noonan (54.65). Leonard also swam the fastest USD time in the 100 butterfly, while her 58.87 was the third-best time overall in that event. Keenan Lineback had a strong swim with a 59.72, while Noonan was not far behind at 1:00.39.

Sarah Reierson picked up right where she left off in 2012-13 as she posted USD's best time in the 100 backstroke at 1:00.79, which was also the fourth-best time overall in the event. Lineback (1:02.63) and Noonan (1:03.31) came in with the second and third-best times on the team, respectively.

In the 100 breaststroke, another USD freshman made an impact in her first action as Julia Personeni swam a team-best 1:11.48. Fellow freshman Christina Jonsson (1:11.84) and sophomore Paige Sellers (1:11.90) also had strong showings in that event for the Toreros.

Lineback led the way for the Toreros in the 200 IM, as she clocked a 2:11.21, the sixth-bests time overall in that event. She was followed by Noonan (2:16.30) and Jonsson (2:17.03).

Among the five pentathlon events, Lineback was USD's top performer, coming in with the sixth-best combined times (6:24.22) from the 100 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breast, and 200 IM. Noonan (6:28.55) posted the eighth-best pentathlon time, followed by Jonsson (6:38.63) with the 14th-best combined times.

Closing out the day were a series of sprints, as Leonard (27.37) and Noonan (27.77) clocked the top USD times in the 50 butterfly. Reierson (28.37) and Noonan (30.50) were the top finishers for USD in the 50 backstroke. The 50 breast saw Danielle Deiparine (33.42) and Personeni (33.62) take home the best times for the Toreros. In the final event of the day, the 50 free, Taylor clocked USD's best time at 24.96, followed by Leonard at 25.43.

Overall, the Toreros put in a very solid showing against a strong Aztec squad in their first action of the fall. The USD women get back in the pool with their annual intrasquad on Oct. 3 at 11:30 am, followed by their first official dual meet of the year when they host UCLA at 12 pm on Oct. 19.
