LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Toreros earned first in three events in the second day of the Beach Cup on their way to earning a second place finish. USD finished the two-day event with 671 points, falling just short of Fresno State's 711 points. LMU finished third with 585 points and Pepperdine scored 263 points.
The Toreros finished the two-day event with 16 first or second place finishes. On Saturday, Keenan Lineback and Christina Jonsson finished first and second in the 400-yard IM, Jackie Taylor finished first in the 200-yard freestyle, and Lexie Franz and Sarah Reierson finished first and second in the 200-yard backstroke.
Morgan White earned fourth place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events earning scores of 203.35 and 209.55. The Toreros kicked off the swimming events with a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Their A team (Taylor, Reierson, Jones, and Franz) finished just behind Fresno State with a time of 1:37.24. The Toreros B relay (Cahill, Walter, Deiparine, and Noonan) earned 18 points with a final time of 1:41.67 for a sixth place finish.
After a strong showing in the 400-yard IM where the Toreros had five swimmers finish in the top ten (Lineback, Jonsson, Scarth, Phillips, and Sellers), USD had two swimmers earn points in the 100-yard butterfly (Noonan; 6th, 59.19 and Beall; 9th; 1:00.61).
In the 200-yard freestyle, the Toreros were led by Jackie Taylor's first place finish (1:54.18), but also had Gwen Walter (5th; 1:56.97), Claire Tolan (10th; 1:59.41), and Jordan Martinko (11th; 2:00.23) earn points.
Sammi Cohn finished first amongst USD swimmers in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing fourth with a time of 1:08.02. Danielle Deiparine (6th; 1:08.45), Christina Jonsson (7th; 1:09.18), Julia Personeni (10th; 1:10.23), and Paige Sellers (11th; 1:10.25) also earned critical points for the Toreros as they kept pace with the Bulldogs.
The Toreros had two top four finishers in the 100-yard backstroke. Sarah Reierson finished second with a time of 58.05 and Lexie Franz finished fourth, clocking in at 59.43. Missy Beall finished seventh at 1:02.72.
The Toreros earned a second and sixth place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. Lexie Franz, Sarah Reierson, Taylor Noonan, and Jackie Taylor finished in 3:57.72 to earn second. The B team (Beall, Deiparine, Sellers, and Jones) finished in 4:06.33 to earn sixth.
In the long-distance 1650-yard freestyle, the Toreros had three finishers in the top five. Gwen Walter finished second with a time of 17:34.69, Morgan Scarth finished behind her at 17:51.32, and Claire Tolan earned fifth (17:58.99).
Franz (1st; 2:04.53) and Reierson (2nd; 2:04.75) earned the Toreros 28 points by finishing first and second in the 200-yard backstroke.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Jackie Taylor finished second by posting a season-best time of 52.27. Taylor Noonan finished sixth at 53.72.
The Toreros had five of the top nine finishers in the 200-yard breaststroke. Christina Jonsson finished second with a season-best time of 2:21.75. Sammi Cohn (5th; 2:26.29), Danielle Deiparine (6th; 2:26.58), Paige Sellers (8th; 2:29.99), and Julia Personeni (9th; 2:32.45) also earned points for USD.
The Toreros had four swimmers record points in the 200-yard butterfly: Keenan Lineback (2nd; season-best 2:03:20), Eleanor Phillips (6th; 2:09.40), Missy Beall (9th; 2:15.92), and Erica Burmood (11th; 2:16.41).
In the final event of the day, the Toreros took third and fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Reierson, Franz, Noonan, and Taylor gave the A team a time of 3:33.62. The B team, which consisted of Deiparine, Walter, Lineback and Jones, finished right behind them at 3:37.84.
The Toreros return to action Saturday, January 25th at San Diego State.
