Brown Fuels USD to Victory over Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. - Senior opposite/middle hitter Alaysia Brown recorded a match-high 18 kills to help propel the University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Gonzaga University Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference match at the Martin Centre.

With the 25-17, 21-25, 26-24, 25-22 win, the Toreros improve to 17-11 overall, move to 10-6 in the WCC, complete the season sweep of the Zags, and have now extended its winning streak over GU to 26. With the loss, the Zags fall to 16-11 overall and 7-9 in the WCC.

Brown recorded her 18 kills on 50 swings, to hit for a .220 clip. Lisa Kramer was the second of three Toreros in double digit kills, as she had 11, while Canace Finley recorded 10 kills. Jianna Bonomi (29 assists) and Kristen Gengenbacher (26 assists), helped steer the USD offense to a .270 attack percentage. Hunter Jennings recorded a match-high 22 digs to pace the USD offense.

In the first set, the Zags raced out to a 4-1 lead to grab the early momentum. USD then got right back into it and the two teams would then sea saw back and forth a bit over a majority of the frame. Then with the score knotted at 10-all, a Jennings service ace sparked a 5-2 Torero run, which forced the Bulldogs into a timeout. Out of the break USD, never slowed down, as they went on to take a 25-17 win.

In the second set, USD was in control early, as a Finley kill gave the Toreros a 10-6 lead. The Zags then answer back with a 13-6 run to take a 19-16 lead, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. GU then maintained the lead and went on to claim the second set 25-21.

In the third set, the two teams locked up in a battle right out of the gates, as both teams took their turn with the lead, and neither team had a lead bigger than one. Then with the score knotted at 16-all, a Finley kill and a GU attack error gave the Toreros an 18-16 lead, which forced the Zags into a timeout. Out of the break, USD would go on a 3-1 run to take a 21-17 lead, again forcing the Zags into a timeout. GU then responded with a 5-2 run to pull back to within one at 23-22, forcing USD into a timeout. USD then took set-point at 24-22, only to see the Bulldogs grab the next two points, to again force the Toreros into a timeout. Out of the break, a GU service error, and a Finely kill gave USD the set, 26-24.

In the fourth and final set, GU would once again stand toe-to-toe with the Toreros throughout the entire frame. After a GU timeout was called with the Toreros leading 18-16, the Zags grabbed the next two points to make things really interesting. Then with things all knotted at 22, USD grabbed the next two points to force the Bulldogs into a timeout. Out of the break, USD grabbed the final points to take the match with a 25-22 win.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they take on the University of Portland, in Portland, at 1 p.m.
