IRVINE, Calif. - Behind the hot shooting of junior guard Malina Hood, and a season-high 58.2% team shooting percentage, the University of San Diego women's basketball team cruised its way to a 87-64 win over UC Irvine Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Bren Events Center.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 9-1 overall, extend its winning streak to five, and have posted the second best start in program history. With the loss, the Anteaters fall to 1-8 overall, and have now lost seven consecutive games.
Malina Hood led all scorers with her 22 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, while connecting on four 3-pointers. Katherine Hamilton also had an outstanding game, as she scored a career-high 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field, while Maya Hood was the third Torero in double figures with 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field. Brooke Jelniker also had a great game, as she just missed a double-double with a season-high eight points, and she pulled down nine rebounds. As a team, USD sot 58.2% from the field, and outrebounded the Anteaters 36-32.
UC Irvine was paced offensively by Shereen Sutherland, who came off the bench to score a team-best 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Mokun Fajemisin, younger sister of USD men's basketball post player Simi Fajemisin, added in 14 points, while both Madison McKenney and Tierra Hicks added in 10 points a piece. As a team, the Anteaters shot 39.1% from the field.
USD heads into finals week and will not be in action again until Dec. 27, as the Toreros will open West Coast Conference play with a 5 p.m. game at the University of Portland.
