SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The USD Softball team (3-5) split their doubleheader in the opening day of the Santa Clara Marriot Bronco Classic. After their rally fell short against Iowa State, the Toreros bounced back to trounce Sacramento State 13-2 in the second game.
In game one the Toreros took an early 1-0 lead after Mary Grabowski knocked in Dana Prelsnik with a RBI single in the first inning.
The Cyclones went up 2-1 in the third inning on a sacrifice fly and RBI single and added three more in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead.
The Toreros rallied in the bottom of the sixth when Kylie Ordos blasted a three run home run to bring the score to 5-4, but USD couldn't add to their total. Jenny Lahitte (2-3) took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits in 4.1 innings.
In game two the Toreros got to the Hornets' Jennifer Hartman early, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. Ordos and Kylie McNutt each had a two RBI single as the Toreros batted around.
The Hornets scored a run in the first and third, but didn't have an answer for Cassidy Coleman (1-2), who had 11 strikeouts in just four innings to pick up her first win of the season.
The Toreros added to their total in the fourth inning when Chloe Kaneko launched a three-run home run, bringing home Prelsnik and McNutt.
The Toreros added another five runs the following inning to give them a commanding 13-2 lead. USD took advantage of two Hornets' errors and Danielle Mavridis has a two RBI single.
The Toreros will face the Cyclones and Hornets again tomorrow, starting with a 12:00 p.m. game against Iowa State.
