SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team picked up a 5-2 win over the University of North Carolina, Wilmington Thursday evening the opening game of the USD Tournament at Fowler Park.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 7-1 overall, and run their winning streak to six. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 4-5 overall.
San Diego got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across a pair of runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning. Josh Goossen-Brown got things started when he was hit by a pitch, and he moved to second on Jesse Jenner's single through the left side. After both runners advanced one base on a Brandon DeFazio sacrifice bunt, Austin Bailey drove in Goossen-Brown with an RBI single through the left side. Kyle Holder then laid down a bunt single, which scored Jenner, to give USD a 2-0 lead.
After San Diego tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning on RBI singles by Connor Joe and Goossen-Brown to give the Toreros a 4-0 lead, the Seahawks then finally got a hit on the board in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Robbie Thorburn singled through the left side to break up PJ Conlon's no-hit attempt. He would eventually come in to score on a Corey Dick RBI single to move the score to 4-1.
San Diego then added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jenner got things started with a single to left field, then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Bailey then drove in Jenner with a RBI single to right field to give USD a 5-1 lead.
UNCW then added in one run on the top of the ninth on a Dillon Bass RBI single to out the game at its final of 5-2.
Offensively for the Toreros, Jenner led the way, as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Joe went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Conlon (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on six hits in 6.0 innings of work. Conlon took a no-hitter in the fourth inning, as he retired 10 of his first 11 batters he faced. Max MacNabb picked up the save for the Toreros, as he allowed no run on no hits in 0.1 innings of work. Mat Batts (0-2) was saddled with loss for the Seahawks, as he allowed four runs on 11 hits in 7.2 innings of work.
The Toreros are scheduled to return to action on Friday at 3 p.m. against Baylor University at Fowler Park, assuming the weather cooperates.
