Lions Stun Toreros in Series Opener

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 17th-ranked University of San Diego baseball dropped a 7-0 decision to Loyola Marymount University Friday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.

With the loss, the Toreros fall to 14-7 overall, move to 3-1 in the WCC, and have now lost three consecutive games. With the win, the Lions improve to 14-8 overall and remain perfect in the WCC at 4-0.

The Lions pushed across one run in the top of the first inning. The LMU run came on a wild pitch, which scored Tommy Cheek, who had singled, to give LMU a 1-0 lead.

The Lions then tacked on three runs in the top of the second inning to grab all the momentum. LMU scored their runs on David Fletcher RBI single, and a Cheek 2-run single, to move the score to 4-0.

The Lions then scored two more runs in the top of the seventh, and one in the eighth, to put the game at its final of 7-0.

Offensively for the Toreros, Hunter Mercado-Hood led the way, as he went 2-for-3.

PJ Conlon (3-1) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed six runs, on six hits, in 6.1 innings of work. LMU's Colin Welmon (4-1) was credited with the win, as he allowed no runs on seven hits in 8.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they resume this three-game series with LMU. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
