SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD Softball team (15-16) fell to Cal State Northridge (22-10) 4-2 Wednesday evening at San Diego State. The Toreros had a 2-1 lead entering the final inning, but the Matadors rallied to score three runs to take the 4-2 win.
The Toreros had their first three batters reach base in the first inning to load the bases, but the Matador's Brianna Elder was able to retire the next three batters to keep USD scoreless.
The Toreros got on the board in the third inning. With Tatum Schultz and Chloe Kaneko on first and second with two outs, Olivia Sandusky hit a single up the middle to bring Schultz in. The Matadors' centerfielder's throw home bounced off the second basemen's head, allowing Kaneko to score, giving USD a 2-0 lead.
Northridge would go on to score four unanswered runs. They cut the USD lead to 2-1 when they scored one on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning. In the top of the seventh, the Matadors rallied to take the lead, scoring three runs. After the leadoff batter singled, she was sacrificed to second and knocked in with a RBI single to tie it up. Two batters later, Taylor Glover hit a two-run home run to left field to give the Matadors a 4-2 advantage.
Cassidy Coleman (6-8) takes the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits. The Matadors' Brianna Elder (15-4) earned the win after giving up two runs (one earned) and five hits.
The Toreros will have an extended break before opening WCC play at home against BYU on April 4th.
