SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 6-4 loss to the University of San Francisco Sunday afternoon in the first game of a double-header at Benedetti Diamond.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 17-9 overall, and fall to 5-3 in the WCC. With the win, the Dons improve to 13-12 overall, move to 3-5 in the WCC, and have evened the series with the Toreros.
San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they pushed across two runs in the top of the first inning. Connor Joe got things started with a single, and Andrew Daniel then drove in Joe with an RBI double. Josh Goossen-Brown moved Daniel to third on a groundout to the pitcher, and a Jesse Jenner sacrifice fly scored Daniel to give USD a 2-0 lead.
The Toreros then added on one more run in the top of the third on a Goossen-Brown RNBI double, which scored Daniel, who had singled, to give USD a 3-0 lead.
San Francisco then began to chip away with the lead, as they took back one run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Hendricks RBI single, which scored Atkinson, who had singled, to move the score to 3-1.
USF then added another run in the bottom of the fifth, and four more in the bottom of the sixth to claim the come from behind win.
Offensively for the Toreros, Goossen-Brown went 2-for-4 with an RBI and one double, while Daniel went 2-for-5 with an RBI and one double.
Troy Conyers (3-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed five runs, three earned, on 10 hits in 5.0 innings of work. Christian Cecilio (3-4) was credited with the win, as he allowed four runs, on eight hits in 7.2 innings of work. Houston Hibberd was credited with his fifth save of the season, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 1.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action later this afternoon in the second half of a double-header later this afternoon with San Francisco.
