SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Santa Clara University scored a pair of runs in the top of the 11th to claim a 5-3 win over the University of San Diego baseball team Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
With the stunning loss, the Toreros fall to 25-14 overall, move to 11-7 in the WCC and are now tied for third place with Gonzaga in the conference standings. With the win, the Broncos improve to 17-22 overall and 8-7 in the WCC.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across one run in the top of the first inning. With one out, Austin Bailey got things started with a single to left field, and he moved to second on an Andrew Daniel single. Jesse Jenner then singled through the left side, which scored Bailey to give USD a 1-0 lead.
San Diego then added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning on one hit. Kyle Holder led off the frame with a walk, and Grant Melker then reached on a bunt single to the pitcher, which moved Holder to second. Jerod Smith was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Connor Joe hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Holder. Bailey then reached on a fielder's choice RBI sacrifice bunt, which allowed Melker to score from third, giving USD a 3-0 lead.
The Broncos then scored one run in the top of the third to finally get on the scoreboard. SCU then took advantage of a USD fielding error in the top of the seventh to score two runs, one earned, moving the score to 3-all and forcing extra innings.
Then with the game knotted at 3-all heading into the top of the 11th inning, the Broncos managed to score two runs on a wild pitch, and an RBI ground out to put the game at its final of 5-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Daniel led the way, as he went 3-for-5.
Josh Goossen-Brown (1-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits in 3.2 innings of work. SCU's Reece Karalus (4-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Broncos, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 2.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will take Sunday off to honor the Easter holiday, then return to the field on Monday as they host Long Beach State in a 6 p.m. non-conference game at Fowler Park.
