SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD Softball team (26-21, 10-5) finished their 2014 season by sweeping Santa Clara (10-34, 5-10) with a 6-1 win Sunday morning. The Toreros finished with a 10-5 WCC record, good for second place behind BYU, who went 12-2. The team's 26 total wins tied a season-high for Coach Melissa McElvain (13th season).
All five of the Torero seniors played a key part in the win. Dana Prelsnik, Kylie Ordos, Charly Swanberg, and Jenny Lahitte combined to go 8-15 at the plate with four runs scored and three RBI. Cassidy Coleman closed out her impressive career by holding the Broncos to one run over 6.1 innings, allowing just three hits. The five Torero seniors won 100 games in their four years at USD, giving them the most wins of any class under Coach McElvain.
For the fourth game in a row the Toreros scored in the first inning. Prelsnik led off the game with a single to leftfield. After being advanced to third base, Ordos knocked her in with a sacrifice fly to rightfield.
The Toreros extended their lead to 4-0 in the second inning. After Lahitte led off with an infield single, Swanberg doubled to rightfield, setting up a two RBI triple to the gap by Prelsnik. The next batter, Tatum Schultz, knocked her home with a single to left field. This gave USD a 4-0 lead and ended Broncos' starter Jessica Turner's day.
USD added to their lead in the fourth inning. Prelsnik led off the frame with another triple, this one to the right-centerfield gap. After an error by the Broncos' second baseman, Prelsnik was able to come all the way around to score. The Toreros added to their total later in the inning with Olivia Sandusky brought home Caitlin Rooney with a RBI single through the right side.
The Broncos scored their lone run when Jordan Newell scored from second on a RBI single by Kimberly Goulart.
Cassidy Coleman (14-10) picked up her career-high 14th win and lowered her season ERA to 2.30. She finished the season with 195 strikeouts, good for third-most in school history. Her 650 career strikeouts are also a USD career record, giving her 102 more than Jenny Lahitte, who is second all-time with 528 punchouts.
The Toreros also set multiple defensive school records. Charly Swanberg and junior Caitlin Rooney became the second and third players in school history to post a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with at least 75 chances. The team set school records for fewest errors (43) and best fielding percentage (.967) as well.
