(Moraga, Calif.) - The USD Toreros battled the Saint Mary's Gaels tough, but despite a great second half rally, came up short in the end, 70-58. The Toreros had no answer for Gaels center Brad Waldow who finished with a game-high 25 points on 11-13 shooting. USD received a game-high 14 points from Johnny Dee with 12 coming in the second half.
Duda Sanadze and Brandon Perry each chipped in with 10 points while point guard Christopher Anderson added 6 points, 6 assists and 4 steals. USD shot 46.9% in the second half on 15-32 shooting after struggling in the first half. The Gaels also received double-digit outings from Carter (15 points) and Bright (11 points, 11 assists). SMC outrebounded USD 33-24 and outshot the Toreros 56.5% to 38.9%.
USD (9-10, 2-5) rallied early in the second half after being down by as many as 17 late in the first half. The Toreros pulled to within two at 47-45 but Saint Mary's (14-3, 6-0 WCC) answered with an 8-0 run on the strength of two three-pointers by Kerry Carter and Aaron Bright to push it back to 55-45.
The Toreros trailed 36-21 at the half as Gaels center Brad Waldow led the way with 15 points on 7-for-8 shooting. USD was paced by Cameron Neubauer and Duda Sanadze with 5 points each in the first 20 minutes of play. The Gaels shot a blistering 60.0% while USD struggled at 27.3%.
The Toreros head to Stockton next to take on the Pacific Tigers on Saturday at 7:00 pm in the Spanos Center.
