SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior forward Sophia Ederaine became just the second Torero in the University of San Diego's women's basketball history to record a triple-double, with 21 points, a career-high 23 rebounds, and a career-high 10 blocks, to help propel the University of San Diego women's basketball team to a thrilling 56-52 win over the University of the Pacific Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 15-3 overall, move into a tie for third place in the WCC at 6-2, and have now won six of their last seven games. With the loss, the Tigers, who came into the week undefeated in the WCC, now fall to 5-2 in the conference standings, and they are 13-5 overall.
The Tigers made the game extremely interesting in the final 1:35 of action. With USD up nine at 51-42, the Tigers managed to put together a 10-1 run to pull back to within one of the Toreros just 12 seconds to go. The Tigers then fouled Katelyn McDaniel, and she in turn hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left, then Pacific missed a 3-pointer, and fouled Maya Hood, who sealed the win with a free throw to give the Toreros the 56-52 win.
Ederaine, who turned in the best performance of her career, was unstoppable this evening, as she recorded her game-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field, while pulling down 23 rebounds, which is the second most single-game rebounds in program history. Ederaine the capped off the triple double with a career-high 10 blocks. Malina Hood was the only other Torero in double figures, as she had 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, while Maya Hood pulled down 11 rebounds. As a team, USD tied a program record for most team rebounds in a game with 60.
For the Tigers, Hallie Eackles led the way with 13 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field, and Kendall Kenyon was the second player in double figures with 12, while leading the team with six rebounds. As a team, USD held the Tigers to just 27.5% from the field, and UoP only recorded 30 rebounds.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they head to Provo, Utah to take on the Cougars of BYU in a 1 p.m. game inside of the Marriott Center.
