Toreros Outlast Zags

SPOKANE, Wash. â€" The 23rd-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team was pushed to five sets by Gonzaga University, and came out on top with a 3-2 win over the Zags Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference match at the Martin Centre.

With the 25-18, 25-27, 24-26, 25-19, 15-13 win, the Toreros improve to 19-7 overall, move to 12-2 in the WCC, remain in a two-way tie for first place in the WCC standings, and have now defeated GU 40 consecutive times. With the loss, the Zags fall to 14-13 overall and fall to 5-9 in the WCC.

In the fifth and final set, GU managed to keep things close, and eventually took a 13-11 lead, forcing the Toreros to burn their final timeout. Out of the break, Lauren Schad recorded a kill, followed by a Torero block to even the match up at 13-all, forcing the Zags to use a timeout. After this break, Schad continued to work on the defensive end, as she recorded back-to-back solo blocks to seal the win for the Toreros.

Lisa Kramer led all players with 23 kills on 38 swings, while only committing four errors to hit for a .500 clip. Jayden Kennedy was the second Torero in double digit kills, as she had 12, while hitting .308, and the final USD player to have double-digit kills was Lauren Schad, who had 10, while collecting five total blocks, three solo. Kristen Gengenbachher recorded 52 assists, while also recording eight digs, just missing a double-double. Defensively, Hunter Jennings recorded 11 digs, and Addie Picha recorded five total blocks.

As a team, USD hit for a .317 clip, while holding the Bulldogs to just a .242 team attack percentage. USD recorded 70 kills, while GU had 65 kills, and the Toreros had 14.0 blocks, compared to GU's 9.0 blocks.

For the Bulldogs, Emmy Allen and Savannah Blinn led the way, as each recorded 13 kills, while Jordan Gasser (12), Kaylie Loewen (11) and Mackayla Ferris (10 kills) were all in double digit kills. Tiyana Hallums recorded a match-high 15 digs in the loss.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they head over to Portland, Ore. to take on the Pilots of the University of Portland in a 12 p.m. WCC match.
