RENO, Nev. -- Behind a 19-point and 12 rebound effort from junior forward Maya Hood, the University of San Diego women's basketball team cruised its way to an 84-47 win over the University of Nevada-Reno Friday evening in the season-opener for both teams at the Lawlor Events Center.
Maya Hood led all scorers with her 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field, while pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds. Malina Hood was the second of four Toreros in double figures, as she scored 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting from the field, while pulling down six rebounds. Cori Woodward went a perfect 3-for-3 from the field to score 10 points, while dishing out five assists, and Caroline Buhr was the final USD player in double figures with a career-high 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, and she to pulled down six boards.
As a team, USD shot 51.5% from the field, while holding the Wolfpack to 30.6% shooting from the field. San Diego out rebounded the home team 44-28. USD forced 21 turnovers, and only committed 10 themselves.
For the Wolfpack, Stephanie Schmid led the team in scoring with 12 points on 3-of-13 points. The only other Nevada player in double figures was Nyasha Lesure, who had 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field. AJ Cephas led the rebounding effort with six.
San Diego will return to action on Tuesday, as they host CSUN in their home-opener inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The game is set to tip off at 6 p.m.
