SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" Behind double-doubles from both Maya Hood and Malina Hood, the University of San Diego women's basketball team picked up a thrilling 78-65 win over Brigham Young University in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams Wednesday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 11-1 overall, move to 1-0 in the WCC and have extended their winning streak to four. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 8-4 overall, move to 0-1 in the WCC, and have seen its five-game winning streak come to an end.
Maya Hood was a dominate force on the floor for USD, as the junior forward recorded a team-high 17 points, and pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds. The 18 rebounds are tied for fourth most single-game rebounds in program history. Malina Hood also scored a team-best 17 points, and she pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds to post her first double-double of the season. Sydney Williams scored a career-high 17 points, on 6-of-14 shooting from the field, while pulling down five rebounds. Cori Woodward did a remarkable job of taking care of the basketball, and she dished out six assists, while scoring four points.
As a team, USD shot 45.5% from the field, while the Cougars shot 42.9% from the floor. The Toreros rebounded BYU 47-29. USD did commit 14 turnovers, while the Cougars only committed 10.
For the Cougars, Lexi Rydalch led the way with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-25 shooting, and she had six rebounds. Kalani Purcell recorded 14 points, and had 11 rebounds to post a double-double. Amanda Wayment was the third BYU player in double figures with 11, while Cassie Nielson added in 10 more points.
San Diego will now take the Christmas holiday break, and return to action on Dec. 31, as they resume WCC play when the University of the Pacific comes to town for a 4 p.m. game.
