SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD Softball team (3-3) knocked off Montana (0-7) 5-3 to win their 2015 home opener. The Toreros scored four runs in the first and Grace Hernandez gave up just two earned runs while throwing a complete game. Chloe Kaneko, Caitlin Rooney, and Kailey Hill all notched two hits.
The Toreros jumped all over Montana starter, Carli Riordan, scoring four quick runs to knock her out of the game. Danielle Mavridis drew a leadoff walk, which was followed by a Chloe Kaneko single. Caitlin Rooney knocked them both in with a double down the left field line. Mary Grabowki brought Rooney home with a single to right field, and then Kailey Hill kept the rally alive with a double to the left-center gap, which ended Riordan's day.
The Griz scored one run in the top of the third to cut into the Toreros' lead. With runners on first and second, Lexie Brenneis hit a RBI single up the middle to give Montana its first run of the evening.
Danielle Mavridis led off the bottom of the fifth with a triple to deep centerfield. Two batters later, Coach McElvain rolled the dice with a suicide squeeze. Caitlin Rooney laid down a beautiful bunt and Mavirids slid into home just in time to beat the tag, giving the Toreros a 5-1 lead.
Montana was able to score one run each in the sixth and seventh inning to bring the score to 5-3.
Grace Hernandez (1-1) threw a complete game to earn her first win of the season. She kept the ball on the ground all evening long, allowing just one earned run on seven hits while striking out six. Montana's Carli Riordan (0-3) took the loss after giving up four runs in just 0.1 innings.
The Toreros return to action on Saturday when they play Kent State at 11:30 a.m. and Montana at 4:30 p.m.
