SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team (0-1) opened up the 2015 season with a 10-3 loss to Morehead State University (1-0) Friday evening in a non-conference game at Fowler Park.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to take advantage of a USD fielding error to score one run on a Chris Robinson RBI single, which scored Ryan Kent, who reached on an error, to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
San Diego then answered right back in the bottom half of the third inning, scoring one run on two hits. Jerod Smith got things started with a double, and Kyle Holder then drove him in with a RBI single to centerfield, moving the score to 1-1.
The Eagles then went on to score three runs in the fifth, four in the seventh and one in the eighth and ninth innings to take a commanding 10-1 lead.
USD then managed to take back two runs in the bottom of the ninth, as Holder led off the inning with a solo home run to right field, and a Grant Melker RBI single put the game at its final of 10-3
Offensively for the Toreros, Holder led the way, as he went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Smith also had a good game, as he went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
MSU starting pitcher Aaron Goe (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Eagles, as he allowed one run on five hits in 6.2 innings of work. USD's David Hill (0-1) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed seven runs, six earned, on six hits, while also striking out seven in 6.1 innings of work.
San Diego and Morehead State will return to action on Saturday, as they engage in a double-header at Fowler Park with a 2 p.m. first pitch.
