Toreros Drop Two to UC Riverside

Feb. 22, 2015

Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The USD Softball team (7-7) ended the Amy S. Harrison Classic 2-2 after losing both games of their doubleheader against UC Riverside Sunday afternoon. The Toreros lost 7-6 in extra innings in game one after their rally came up short and they fell 10-2 in game two.

Freshman Paige von Sprecken had her first career rough outing after giving up five runs in just 2.2 innings, but the Toreros would come back from an early 5-0 deficit. This was the third straight game where USD was down early and staged a late rally.

The Toreros got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, scoring two unearned runs to bring the score to 5-2. USD put their rally caps on in the seventh. After loading the bases with one out, Kailey Hill hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Hannah Gilliland. With two outs, freshman Frankie Perales hit a game-tying two RBI double to left-center. Perales hit a team-high .455 over the weekend.

In the top of the eighth, with the international tiebreaker in effect, the Toreros took a 6-5 lead when Tatum Schultz hit a pinch-hit RBI single to left to bring home Olivia Sandusky. After a sacrifice bunt, the Toreros had runners on second and third with one out and Chloe Kaneko at the plate, arguably their best hitter in the clutch. Kaneko hit into a tough-luck double play; she flew out to right and Kelsey Borello was thrown out at home trying to tag up.

The Highlanders scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth, winning on a walkoff wild pitch. Grace Hernandez (1-3) took the loss despite allowing no earned runs in five innings of work.

In game two, USD scored first when Sandusky singled home Danielle Mavridis, who reached on a leadoff double. Riverside quickly retook the lead, scoring four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first.

The Toreros got one run back in the second with a Mavridis RBI single, but that would be all the scoring for USD.

Kailey Hill's struggles continued in the fourth when she gave up a two-run home run. The Highlanders' offensive surge poured over into the fifth inning when they scored four more runs on three hits to end the game with a 10-2 score.

The Toreros return to action on Wednesday when they host Cal State Fullerton at 6:00 p.m.
