SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior right-hander David Hill rung up 14 batters, as his dominance on the mound helped lead the University of San Diego baseball team to a 3-0 win over the University of Portland Friday evening in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams at Fowler Park.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 8-7 overall, move to 1-0 in the WCC and have now won six of their last seven games. With the loss, the Pilots fall to 4-17 overall and 0-1 in the WCC.
Hill (3-2) was brilliant on the mound for the Toreros once again, as he had the Portland batters completely baffled. Hill retired the first seven batters, before Eric Sapp broke up the perfect game with a single. Hill on the evening, scattered just four hits, struck out a career-high 14 batters on 109 pitches in his first complete game as a Torero. The 14 strikeouts is tied for third most in USD single-game history with Mike Saipe who did it in the 1994 season. The USD single-game record is 16, held by former Torero All-Americans Brian Matusz and Kyle Blair.
San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they managed to push across one run in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Kyle Holder got things rolling with a double down the left field line. After Jesse Jenner was hit by a pitch, Austin Bailey drove in Holder with a single through the right side to give USD a 1-0 lead.
The Toreros then doubled their lead in the bottom of the second inning, scoring one run on three hits. With one out, Ben Wylly singled to right field, and moved to third on a Bryson Brigman single to right centerfield. Kyle Smith then laid down a drag bunt, which scored Wylly from third, and Smith safely reached first base, to receive an RBI single.
San Diego then capped the scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning, as a Jenner RBI single, scored Holder, who had doubled down the right field line, to put the game at its final of 3-0.
Offensively for the Toreros, Holder led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Wylly also had a good day at the plate, as he went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Portland's Jackson Lockwood (1-3) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Pilots, as he allowed three runs on nine hits in 8.0 innings of work.
The Toreros and Pilots will return to action on Saturday, as they resume this WCC series with a 6 p.m. first pitch at Fowler Park.
