SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team (1-9, 0-3 WCC) went up against top-tier conference opponents Wednesday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. Although the Toreros tested the Pepperdine in tight sets, the No. 14 Waves took down the Toreros 4-0.
In doubles, it was clear the Waves had an edge. Pepperdine's Lorraine Guillermo and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai got on the board first, defeating junior Dana Oppinger and freshman Drew Spinosa 6-1. Soon after, the Waves clinched at the No. 2 spot against juniors Marta Stojanovic and Mikayla Morkel-Brink.
The Toreros began to find to find their groove as singles commenced, challenging the Waves in close sets. Waves' Lorraine Guillermo, who is ranked No. 15 in the nation, proved to be too solid extending Pepperdine's lead after a two-set victory over Stojanovic. After the Waves grabbed a point at the No. 6 spot, Pepperdine's Matea Cutura ousted sophomore Janine Koleta 6-2, 7-6(4) to clinch the match.
The remaining matches, although unfinished, stayed neck and neck. Oppinger was trailing Pepperdine's Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai 7-6(8), 1-0, while Morkel-Brink and Wave's Michaela Capannolo held serve at 5-4 in their second set.
The Toreros return to action this Sunday, March 29th, for another conference contest at 10:00 a.m. - PT.
