SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Torero softball team's (21-15) six game win streak was snapped Tuesday afternoon when the Gauchos rallied to knock off USD 6-5 on a walk-off single in game one of their doubleheader.
The game got off to a fast start with both teams scoring seven combined first inning runs after taking advantage of costly errors. After the first two Toreros were retired, Kailey Hill walked and Chloe Kaneko reached on an error. Mary Grabowski then made the Gauchos pay with a three-run home run to left field to give USD an early 3-0 lead.
The Gauchos quickly responded in the bottom of the first. They scored an unearned run on a three-base throwing error and three more on a pair of singles to retake the lead at 4-3. This snapped USD's eight game streak of giving up two runs or less.
The Toreros evened the score in the top of the fourth when Danielle Mavridis knocked home Tatum Schultz with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Gauchos retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring an unearned run on an infield error.
Grabowski continued her great day with a leadoff single in the seventh. After being advanced to second on a Caitlin Rooney sacrifice bunt, Grabowski came around to score the tying run on Schultz single up the middle. Grabowski went 3-4 with three RBI and two runs score.
The Gauchos retook the lead for the third time in the bottom of the seventh. With a runner on second and two outs, Stacy Cavazos hit a game-winning RBI single up the middle to give UCSB the 6-5 and snap USD's win six game win streak.
Paige von Sprecken (15-6) suffered her sixth loss of the season. She gave up just two earned runs on nine hits but walked seven batters.
