SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The USD Softball team (21-16) dropped game two of their doubleheader at UC Santa Barbara, falling 4-3 in ten innings despite a stellar performance from Megan Sabbatini.
Just like game one, the Toreros scored a run in the first inning. Olivia Sandusky led off with a single and came around to score four batters later on a Mary Grabowski RBI single. It was Grabowski's fourth RBI of the day.
USD tacked on one more run in the third when Caitlin Rooney was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Toreros extended their lead to 3-0 in the following inning when Olivia Sandusky hit a solo home run to left field. Sandusky scored all three USD runs and now has reached base in 15 straight games.
The Gauchos rallied to tie it up in the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of home runs; a two-run shot followed by a solo home run.
As the game went into extra innings, neither pitcher would give up another hit. In the tenth inning, with the international tiebreaker in affect, the Gauchos scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly.
Megan Sabbatini pitched a career-high 9.2 innings allowing just five hits and three earned runs.
The Toreros return to action on Friday when they begin WCC play against Pacific with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is 4:00 p.m.
