SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The USD Softball team (10-10) fell to Sacramento State 4-2 Friday morning in the first game of the Mustang Classic. The Toreros recorded nine hits but left runners on base in each of the first six innings and went 1-11 with runners in scoring position. This is the first time USD has lost this season when having more hits than their opponent.
The Hornets scored two first inning runs to jump out to an early lead. With runners on first and second, Paige Castro doubled down the left field line to score one. The next batter, Alexa Chattleton, plated one more with an infield single.
The Toreros cut into the Hornets' lead in the top of the second. Olivia Sandusky, who went 3-3 in the game, led off with a single and then stole second base. After being advanced to third on an infield groundout, she came around to score on a wild pitch.
The Hornets' had RBI doubles in both the third and fourth inning to extend their lead to 4-1. USD got one run back in the top of the sixth when Paige von Sprecken singled home Frankie Perales, who had a leadoff triple, but that would be all the scoring USD could muster.
Von Sprecken (7-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits. The Hornets' Celina Matthias earned the win, after holding USD to two runs on nine hits.
The Toreros return to action later this afternoon when they face Cal Poly at 4:30 p.m. That game will be streamed live here.
