SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Despite a stellar performance from Grace Hernandez, the USD Softball team (10-11) fell to Cal Poly 1-0 Friday evening in the Mustang Classic. Cal Poly loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh and won on a walkoff RBI single.
Hernandez had arguably the best game of her career, holding the Mustangs scoreless through the first six innings. However the Torero offense couldn't provide her with any run support, managing just two hits on the night.
The Toreros were held hitless through the first four innings and only had a runner in scoring position once. In the top of the sixth, USD had runners on first and second with two outs, but grounded out to end the inning.
The game was tied 0-0 heading into the final frame and Hernandez got the leadoff batter to pop out to second. However the next two batters singled, which prompted Coach McElvain to bring in her ace, Paige von Sprecken. She walked her first batter on four pitches to load the bases and then gave up a game-winning single, dropping the Toreros under .500 for the first time since the opening weekend.
Hernandez (2-4) took the loss despite allowing just one run on six hits in 6.1 innings. The Mustangs
USD resumes the Mustang Classic Saturday afternoon when they face Southern Utah at 4:30 p.m. The Toreros beat the Thunderbirds at home 2-1 on February 15 and will face them again Sunday morning.
