Toreros Split Doubleheader

March 8, 2015

Box Score

SAN LUIS OPISPO, Calif. - The USD Softball team (12-12) wrapped up the Mustang Classic by splitting their Sunday doubleheader. In game one, the Toreros late rally fell short as they lost to Southern Utah 4-3, but USD bounced back with an 11-0 win over Bryant in five innings in the second game.

Despite not striking out even once and racking up nine hits, the Toreros could only score in one inning, rallying to score three runs in the sixth inning.

The Thuderbirds cracked the scoreboard first when Katie Greenberg hit a solo home run to left to leadoff the second inning. Southern Utah added three more in the fourth on a pair of RBI singles.

Down 4-0, the Torero offense started to click in the sixth. After Frankie Perales reached on a leadoff single, she came around to score on a Chloe Kaneko RBI single. The next batter, Kailey Hill, hit a two-run home run to left to cut the deficit to one run. Hill leads the team with four home runs and 15 RBI.

In the seventh, the first two Torero batters were retired but von Sprecken walked and Perales, who went 3-4 in the game, singled to put the tying run on second base. Kelsey Borello pinch ran for von Sprecken, but was thrown out at home to end the game after Danielle Mavridis singled.

Grace Hernandez (3-5) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in four innings. Megan Sabbatini came in relief and allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings. Southern Utah's Hannah Wynn (2-3) earned the win despite giving up nine hits and three runs with no strikeouts.

Game two was a much different story; the Toreros' offense wasted no time, scoring four runs in the first inning. Perales led off the game with a double and then Mavridis and Hill walked to load the bases. USD responded with three straight singles by Olivia Sandusky, Tatum Schultz, and Mary Grabowski to open up an early 4-0 lead.

USD continued to build on their lead in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded once again, Sierra Berryessa had a RBI infield single, which was followed by a Sandusky two-RBI double to centerfield. USD would add two more in the inning on a groundout and error to give them a 9-0 lead.

USD tacked on two more unearned runs in the fifth to give USD their third game with double-digit runs this season.

Paige von Sprecken (8-4) was nearly unhittable, allowing just two hits in five scoreless innings while striking out six.

The Toreros will face Bryant again on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at the USD Softball Complex.
