Dons Stun Toreros, 65-57

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The second-seeded University of San Diego women's basketball team shot just 16.7% in the second half, which contributed to a stunning 65-57 loss to the sixth-seeded University of San Francisco Monday afternoon in the semi-final game of the West Coast Conference Tournament at the Orleans Arena.

With the loss, the Toreros fall to 24-6 overall, saw their four-game winning streak come to an end, and will now await to see which postseason tournament they will be playing in. With the win, USF improves to 19-12 overall and will advance on to play fifth-seeded BYU in the championship game on Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Katelyn McDaniel paced the Toreros offense this afternoon, as she recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Both Maya Hood and Malina Hood added in 10 points apiece, while Sophia Ederaine recorded 12 rebounds, had eight points and five blocked shots.

USD as a team shot 38.6% for the game, which included hitting 63.0% of their shots in the first half. The Dons on the other hand shot 38.1% from the field. USD out rebounded USF 42-35, but San Diego committed 12 turnovers to only six for San Francisco.

For the Dons, Taj Winston led the scoring effort with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, while Zhane Dikes (16 points) and Taylor Proctor (10 points) were also in double figures.

In the first half, it was close over the first eight minutes of action. Then with the score knotted at 17-all, a McDaniel lay-up sparked a 15-2 Torero run over the next six minutes of action to give USD all the momentum and a 32-19 lead with 6:48 to go. USD would eventually build up its lead to as many as 15 at 40-25 with 2:52 to go, before going into the break up 42-29.

In the second half, USD went ice cold from the field, while USF got hot, as the Dons opened the frame on an 11-0 run to pull to within two at 42-40 with 16:09 to go. USD finally scored its first points of the frame from the free throw line at 15:34, but it wasn't until a Malina Hood 3-pointer with 12:26 to go did USD make its first basket.

The Dons would not take the lead until a Winston lay-up went down at 10:44, and USF then continued to slowly pull away and build up a lead as big as nine, but USD did cut it back down to four with 57 seconds left, but the Toreros could get no closer, as they Dons held on to win 65-57.
