SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team (20-13, 10-3 WCC) held off a late University of the Pacific (7-26, 5-9 WCC) rally to claim a 8-5 win Saturday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they managed to score one run in the bottom of the first inning. Bryson Brigman got things started, as he singled up the middle, and moved to second on a balk. Colton Waltner then drove in Brigman with an RBI single up the middle to give USD a 1-0 lead.
After Brigman doubled USD's lead in the bottom of the second on a solo home run to left field, USD broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth with four runs on four hits. Austin Bailey got things started with a single up the middle, and he moved to second on Riley Adams' infield single. Both runners then moved up a base on a wild pitch. Three batters later, Brigman hit a 2-run single to right field to give USD a 4-0 lead. Holder then tripled in Brigman for the third run of the inning, and Holder capped the scoring for the inning by scoring on a wild pitch to put the game out of reach at 6-0.
USD then went on to score two runs in the fifth, and Pacific made a late push by scoring one in the seventh, three in the eighth and one in the ninth to put the game at its final of 8-5.
Offensively for the Toreros, Brigman led the way, as he went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Adams also had a good day, as he went 3-for-4 with one double, and all but one Torero who went to the plate recorded at least one hit.
PJ Conlon (5-2) was masterful on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on six hits in 7.0 innings of work, while striking out five. Pacific's Will Lydon (1-7) was saddled with the loss for the Tigers, as he allowed eight runs on 12 hits in 4.2 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday, as they conclude this WCC series with the Tigers at 12 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Fowler Park.
