LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The USD Softball Team (26-17, 5-1) rallied to knock off Loyola Marymount 3-1 to win the series and stay one game behind BYU in the WCC standings. The win was the Toreros' 26th on the season, which ties Coach McElvain's career best; USD has now won at least 26 games in three of the past four seasons.
The senior class of Kylie McNutt, Caitlin Rooney, Morgan Kurtz, Chloe Kaneko, Kylie Crawford, and Noelle Devlin now have 102 wins, which of any recruiting class under Coach McElvain; last year's senior class racked up 100 career wins.
LMU scored their first and only run of the game in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly.
The Toreros immediately responded and tied it up in the top of the fifth when Olivia Sandusky hit a two-out double down the left field line to score Danielle Mavridis, who led off the inning with a single.
USD grabbed their first lead in the top of the sixth inning. Mary Grabowski doubled to centerfield, and then Chloe Kaneko singled up the middle to score Hannah Gilliland, who pinch ran for Grabowski. USD scored one more, by taking advantage of a defensive miscue by the LMU centerfielder.
Paige von Sprecken (19-7) continued her dominant season by holding the Lions to one run on just three hits, while striking out six. Her 19 wins tie her for the 4th most in USD single-season history (Tiffany Wasilewski in 1992 and Lisa Ziomkowski in 1989) and are the most in the nation amongst freshmen.
The Toreros will host Santa Clara next weekend for their final home games of the 2015 season.
