SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team dropped a tough 6-2 decision to the University of San Francisco Saturday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 22-15 overall, move to 12-5 in the WCC and are now in second place in the WCC all by themselves, just one game back of USF. Should USD win on Sunday, they will move back into first place. With the win, the Dons improve to 21-19 overall and 13-4 in the WCC, and take over sole possession of first place in the WCC for the first time this season.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across one run in the bottom of the first inning. Bryson Brigman led off the frame with a double to right field. Kyle Holder grounded out to the pitcher, which moved Brigman to third. Jesse Jenner then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, which scored Brigman, to give USD the early 1-0 lead.
The Dons then found a way to get to USD starting pitcher PJ Conlon in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Nico Girratano got things started with a walk, and a Brendan Hendriks single moved Girratano to second. Derek Atkinson then hit a 3-run homer to right field, to give the Dons a 3-1 lead.
San Diego then took back a run in the bottom of the fourth, but USF answered back with one in the sixth, and two in the seventh to take a 6-2 lead.
USD then put on their rally caps in the eighth inning, and managed to load the bases. Then with two outs, Aidan Stinnett was at the plate, and after fighting off several pitches, blistered a ball down the third baseline, and appeared to be fair to all the Torero fans, and it would have cleared the bases. But the home plate umpire called it foul immediately, sending all runners back to their respective bases, and Stinnett then flew out to centerfield to end the USD scoring threat.
Offensively for the Toreros, Brigman and Holder each went 2-for-4 with Brigman scoring one run.
PJ Conlon (5-3) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed six runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings of work. USF's Christian Cecilio (5-1) was credited with the win for the Dons, as he allowed two runs on seven hits in 8.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday, as they conclude this three-game WCC series with the Dons. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Fowler Park.
