PROVO, Utah -- The USD Softball team (28-19, 7-3) was shutout 8-0 in game one of their doubleheader at BYU Friday evening. Game two was delayed nearly two hours due to rain and then was suspended in the bottom of the third with the game tied at 3-3. The game will be resumed at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning followed by the final game of the series.
The Cougars threatened early in game one, loading the bases in the first inning, but Paige von Sprecken was able to get McKenzie St. Clair to strike out to end BYU's threat.
The Toreros then loaded the bases in the top of the third, but McKenna Bull was also able to escape out of the jam to keep the game scoreless.
The Cougars struck in the bottom of third to score three runs, headlined by Sydney Broderick's two-run double to left centerfield. Their momentum carried over into the following inning where they scored five runs on five hits to give them an 8-0 lead, which ended the game in five innings
The Toreros managed just one hit, but drew three walks. Paige von Sprecken had her second rough outing in a row, allowing seven runs in three innings pitched. Grace Hernandez allowed one run in her one inning of relief.
Game two was suspended in the third inning with the score tied at 3-3. Both teams were powered be three-run home runs. BYU's Ashley Thompson gave BYU an early 3-0 lead with a three run bomb to centerfield in the first inning.
The Toreros immediately responded with a three run blast of their own when Chloe Kaneko also sent one over the centerfield wall in the top of the second, plating Mary Grabowski and Tatum Schultz.
Game two will be resumed at 10:00 a.m. Saturday and will be followed by the final game of the series, scheduled to air on BYUtv at noon.
