PROVO, Utah -- The USD Softball team's (28-21, 7-5) first trip to BYU didn't turn out as Coach McElvain had hoped as the Cougars swept the Toreros. Saturday began with the continuation of the second game of Friday night's doubleheader, which was suspended in the bottom of the third with a 3-3 tie, BYU went on to win that game 9-3. The Toreros then fell 6-2 in the final game of the series.
The second game was tied at 3-3 fueled by Chloe Kaneko's three-run home run Friday evening, but the Cougars had a big fifth inning on Saturday, highlighted by a McKenzie St. Clair grand slam, to take an 8-3 lead.
The Cougars scored an unearned run in the sixth and went on to win 9-3. Paige von Sprecken (21-10) had another shaky outing, giving up eight runs in five innings.
In the final game of the series, the Cougars were the first to strike, scoring two in the second inning on a pair of two-out RBI singles.
BYU added to their lead in the third inning when St. Clair struck again, this time with a two-RBI double, which ended starter Grace Hernandez's day. The first batter von Sprecken faced in relief singled up the middle to score St. Clair and give BYU a 5-0 lead.
The Cougars added one more in the fourth with a RBI triple by Sydney Broderick.
The Toreros ended the Cougars' McKenna Bull's no-hit bid and shutout in the seventh inning. Morgan Kurtz got USD's first hit with a leadoff single to left field. The Toreros then plated two runs with back-to-back doubles by Chloe Kaneko and Tatum Schultz.
Grace Hernandez suffered the loss after giving up four earned runs in 2.1 innings. Von Sprecken gave up one run in 1.2 innings and Megan Sabbatini pitched two innings of scoreless relief.
The Toreros wrap up the season next weekend at St. Mary's. Friday's doubleheader begins at noon. Saturday's noon game will be shown on TheW.tv.
