SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Junior middle hitter Lisa Kramer recorded a career-high 20 kills, but it wasn't enough as the 18th-rank University of San Diego women's volleyball team was upset by Southern Methodist University, 3-1, Saturday morning in a non-conference match at the UCSB Tournament.
With the 25-13, 23-25, 20-25, 20-25 loss, the Toreros fall to 5-3 overall and have lost back-to-back matches for the first time this season. With the win, the Mustangs improve to 7-1 on the season.
Kramer recorded her match-best 20 kills on 30 swings, while only committing three attack errors to post a .600 attack percentage. Canace Finley was the second of three Toreros in double digit kills, as she had 12, while Jayden Kennedy added in 11 kills, marking back-to-back matches that she has been in double-digit kills. Kristen Gengenbacher recorded a double-double with 27 assists and 14 digs, while Hunter Jennings led the defense with 15 digs.
As a team, USD hit for a .181 clip, while SMU hit for a .199 clip. The Mustangs recorded 14.0 blocks, to USD's 8.0.
For the Mustangs, Katie Hegarty led the way with 11 kills, while Janelle Giordano was the only other player in double-digit kills with 10. Avery Acker had 44 assists, while Morgan Heise had a team-best 15 digs.
The Toreros will return to action at 4 p.m. today, as they take on the host Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara inside of the Thunderdome.
