LONG BEACH, Calif. â€" Senior middle hitter Lisa Kramer recorded a career-high 21 kills, but it wasn't enough, as the 21st-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team was upset by Long Beach State University, 3-2, Friday afternoon in the opening match of the LBSU Mizuno Invitational.

After the two teams battled to make it a fifth and deciding set, USD went right to work in the fifth and raced out to a 4-1 lead. USD then held the lead until it was 10-8, then the 49ers used a 4-1 run to take a 12-11 lead, forcing USD into a timeout. Out of the break, USD grabbed the next two points, to force LBSU into a timeout. USD then took match-point on a Lauren Fuller kill, which forced LBSU into its final timeout. The 49ers then recorded the next two points to take match-point and force USD into its final timeout. San Diego would grab the next point on a Lauren Schad kill, but Long Beach State then grabbed the next two points to complete the upset at 17-15.

With the 22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 24-26, 15-17 loss, the Toreros fall to 6-4 overall. With the win, the 49ers improve to 9-2 overall.

Kramer led all players with her 21 kills on 36 attempts, while only committing four attack errors to hit for a .472 clip. Kramer also had nine digs, and chipped in with six blocks. Merve Tanyel was the second of four Toreros in double digit kills, as she recorded 16, and just missed a double-double with eight digs. Canace Finley added in 14 kills, and had a career-high eight blocks, while Lauren Fuller had 10 kills. Kristen Gengenbacher recorded 38 assists, while Caila Stapleton added in 24 more assists to go along with 10 digs to post her first double-double of the season. Hunter Jennings racked up 22 digs to pace the USD defense.

As a team, USD hit for a .253 clip, while LBSU hit for a .238 clip. The 49ers out blocked the Toreros 15-12.

For the Beach, Nele Barber led the way, as she recorded 16 kills, and had 13 digs to post a double-double. Ashley Murray was the only other LBSU player to record double-digit kills, as she had 13, and hit for a .292 clip. Jenelle Hudson recorded 44 assists, an she had 10 digs to post a double-double.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday at 12 p.m., when they resume play in the LBSU Mizuno Tournament at UC Irvine, against the Anteaters.
