SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The Torero women's soccer team (1-4-1) lost to Utah 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium. The Toreros scored their lone goal in the 85th minute, but couldn't overcome the Utes' two second half goals.
The Torero defense had a strong first half, not allowing a shot on goal until the 26th minute. The Utes managed only four shots in the first half.
The Toreros first opportunity came in the 23rd minute when a Tori Manfredonia cross was deflected towards Julianne DeArmas in front of the box. With the ball bouncing high, DeArmas couldn't control it and was unable to get a foot on it.
The Toreros closed the first half with a flurry of chances in the last five minutes. Their best look came in the 41st minute when Maddie Marotta sent a low cross to Julia Sherwood in the box. Sherwood fired, but the Utah keeper, Lindsey Luke, made a diving stop.
Despite USD carrying all the momentum in to the halftime break, it was the Utes who found the back of the net early in the second half. In the 51st minute, Mariah Elmer dribbled to her right and fired a low shot across her body that slipped past Michelle Craft into the lower left corner of the goal.
Five minutes later, Elmer struck again. In the 56th minute, Taylor Slattery took a crack from the top of the box, forcing Craft to make a jump save. Her save deflected off the crossbar and the ball bounced right to Elmer for an easy tap-in.
The Toreros cracked their scoreless streak in the 85th minute. Julia Sherwood's corner kick was punched out by the Utah goalie, but Caitlyn Kretzschmar was right their to clean up the deflection and cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Toreros finished with 12 shots to Utah's 11, and both teams had six corner kicks.
Michelle Craft made two saves but was saddled with the loss. Utah's Lindsey Luke made four stops.
The Toreros return to action next Friday when they travel to USC for a 2:00 p.m. match.
