MALIBU, Calif. â€" Behind a balanced team effort, the University of San Diego women's basketball team cruised its way to a 70-54 win over Peppedine University Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference game inside the Firestone Fieldhouse.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 19-2 overall, marking the best start in program history, move to 9-1 in the WCC, and remain in a 2-way tie for first place. With the loss, the Waves fall to 5-16 overall and 1-9 in the WCC.
Maya Hood led the team with 23 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, while pulling down six rebounds. Malina Hood had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sydney Williams was the final Torero in double figures with 10 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field. Cori Woodward had a team-leading seven assists in the win.
As a team, USD shot 42.9% from the field, while Pepperdine shot just 38.9% from the floor. The Waves out rebounded the Toreros 42-32, and the home team committed 23 turnovers, while USD only had 15.
For the Waves, Erica Ogwumike led the way with 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field, while also pulling down 13 rebounds to post a double-double. Allie Green was the only other player to record double figures, as she had 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the field. The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they remain in the Los Angeles area and take on Loyola Marymount University in a 2 p.m. WCC game.
