Third Quarter Spark Lifts USD to win No. 20

LOS ANGELES, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego women's basketball team outscored Loyola Marymount University 28-14 in the third quarter to overcome a halftime deficit and win their eighth consecutive game, with a 75-67 victory over the Lions Saturday afternoon at the Gersten Pavilion.

After USD was trailing 29-24 at halftime, the Toreros used a 7-0 run to open the third quarter, sparked by a Sydney Williams lay-up and capped on a Cori Woodward lay-up to give USD a 31-29 lead with 7:51 to go, and forcing the Lions into a timeout. After the break in action, there was then four ties, and two lead changes before the game was knotted for the final time at 40-all with 4:54 to go. USD then outscored LMU 12-3 over the final five minutes of action to take a commanding 52-43 lead into the fourth quarter. San Diego never looked back, as they maintained the lead for the remainder the game en route to claiming the win.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 20-2 overall, marking the fifth consecutive season that USD has posted a 20-win season. USD also remains in a 2-way tie for first place in the WCC at 10-1 in league play, and the Toreros have extended their winning streak to eight. With the loss, the Lions fall to 7-15 overall and 3-8 in the WCC.

Malina Hood led the USD scoring effort with 19 points on 7-of-21 shooting from the field, while also pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out three assists. Maya Hood recorded another double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. With her 17 points, Maya Hood has become the 19th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000 career points mark. Woodward was the third Torero in double figures, as she had 13 points, while dishing out a game-high eight assists. Aubrey Ward-El scored 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, and Williams chipped in with 10 points.

As a team, USD shot 40.3% from the field, while the Lions shot 40.6%. USD out rebounded the home team 49-34, while committing 16 turnovers, and LMU committed 13 turnovers. LMU dominated the points in the paint at 40-28, while USD scored 16 points off turnovers and LMU had 18 points of turnovers.

For the Lions, Andee Velasco led the way, as she had 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting form the field, while both Sophie Taylor and Deanna Johnson chipped in with 14 points a piece. The final LMU player in double figures was Cheyenne Wallace, who had 12 points.

San Diego will return to action on Thursday, as they face a big road test at Saint Mary's College. Tip off is set for 6:30 p.m.
