COLLEGE PARK, Md. â€" The USD men's soccer team (3-4-3) fell at No. 1 Maryland (8-0-2) 2-0 Monday evening. The Terrapins scored on a counter attack in the final minutes of the first half and again on a penalty kick in the second frame.

Behind a strong performance from the Torero defense, the Toreros played very well all evening, going toe-to-toe with the nation's top ranked team. They made the most of their possession and created scoring opportunities for themselves, but couldn't find the back of the net. Maryland, who is undefeated on the year, has shutout their last three opponents.

USD nearly took the lead in the 40th minute on a counter attack that produced a three-on-three. Freddy Polzer brought the ball up the left side and sent a nice touch pass to Djordje Babic at the top of the box. However, Babic's low shot was scooped up by Maryland's goalkeeper, Cody Niedermeier.

A few minutes later, Maryland had their own counter attack and took the lead after D.J. Reeves split a couple of USD defenders to score from five yards out in the 42nd minute.

The Toreros' best opportunity came in the 65th minute. Michael Turner slipped a beautiful through ball inside the box to Allen Luhrs, who went for the near post goal, but Niedermeier made a diving save.

A few minutes later, Turner had a shot of his own, sending a rocket from the top of the box that just missed high.

Just as the Toreros had began to build momentum, they were called for a questionable foul inside the box to set up a Maryland penalty kick in the 69th minute. The Terps were trying to shake the USD defense and had little room to maneuver, so they tried to force their way in to the box and were tripped up after creating contact.

Maryland's Amar Sejdic placed the PK in the lower left corner as USD's Thomas Olsen dove the opposite way, giving the Terps a 2-0 lead.

Maryland finished with nine shots while USD had four (two on goal).

The Toreros return to Southern California when they open up WCC play Sunday at LMU with a 1:00 p.m. match.
