SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Five different Toreros scored in double figures, paced by senior forward Maya Hood's 19, to propel the University of San Diego women's basketball team to a thrilling 91-53 win over cross-town rival San Diego State University Thursday evening in a non-conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Aztecs fall to 1-2 with the loss.
Hood led all players with her 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field, and she pulled down eight rebounds, to just miss a double-double. With her 19 points, Hood has now moved into 10th all-time on the USD scoring list. Katherine Hamilton was the next Torero in double figures, as she had 12 on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Both Jamie Kissinger, and Sydney Williams scored 11 points apiece, which marked a career-high for Kissinger. Aubrey Ward-El was the final Torero in double figures, as she scored 10 points. Cori Woodward recorded six assists, and had nine points.
As a team, USD shot a season-high 64.9% from the field, while the Aztecs shot dismal 27.0%. USD out rebounded the visitors 42-31, but USD did commit 18 turnovers, to SDSU's 17. This game featured two lead changes, and the Toreros led by as many as 40 points at the 8:43 mark in the fourth quarter, while SDSU's biggest lead was one.
For the Aztecs, McKynzie Fort led the team with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field, before fouling out of the contest. Monique Terry led the team with seven rebounds, and both Kymberly Ellison and Ariell Bostick led the team with one assist apiece.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday, as they travel to Greeley Colo., for a game against the University of Northern Colorado. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
