TEMPE, Ariz. - The USD softball team (1-1) kicked off the 2016 season with a pair of 2-1 games that were both decided in the final inning. In the first game, freshman Lauren Kane hit a game-winning double to lift USD over Boise State; in the nightcap New Mexico hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to give the Lobos a 2-1 win.
In the season opener, USD put a runner in scoring position in each of the first four innings, but failed to score. Meanwhile, Boise State took a 1-0 lead in the third with a pair of singles.
The Toreros broke through in the fifth inning when Kailey Hill hit a RBI sacrifice fly in foul territory with the bases loaded to tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the seventh after the first two Toreros were retired, Hill drew a walk and then scored the game-winning run with Kane's clutch double in the right-centerfield gap.
Megan Sabbatini earned the win in relief, pitching 2.1 hitless innings. Senior Grace Hernandez allowed just one run on three hits in her 4.2 innings. Senior Tatum Schultz led all players with three hits.
The Toreros fell behind in game two as well, allowing the Lobos to score in the fourth inning on a RBI single after the leadoff batter doubled.
USD tied the game in the sixth inning with Kane's first collegiate home run, a solo shot to centerfield.
The Lobos took the lead in the top of the seventh with a solo home run of their own, and the Toreros were retired in order in the bottom of the inning.
Sabbatini (1-1) struck out a career-high 12 batters, but took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits.
The Toreros will play three more games in Arizona before returning home. They play Maryland Saturday at 11:00 a.m. PT.
