SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 59-54 decision to the University of San Francisco Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 21-5 overall, and move to 11-4 in the WCC. With the win, the Dons improve to 15-10 overall and move to 6-8 in the WCC, while winning in San Diego for the first time since the 2003 season.
Heading into the fourth quarter, USD was down nine, but that didn't stop the Toreros from putting on a furious rally, as they managed to cut the lead down to one on a few occasions. Then after USF's Proctor Taylor put the Dons back up three with a pair of free throws and 24 seconds left, San Diego had three 3-point attempts not fall, then they fouled USF with one second remaining. The Dons hit a pair of free throws to put the game at its final of 59-54.
Malina Hood led the team's offense on senior day, as she scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the field. Sydney Williams was the only other USD player to score in double figures, as she had 12 points, and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Cori Woodward chipped in with nine points, and she dished out five assists.
As a team, USD shot 37.3% from the field, while the Dons shot 36.4% from the floor. USD was out rebounded 42-33, and the Toreros uncharacteristically recorded 16 turnovers, while USF committed 19 turnovers.
For San Francisco, Taylor Proctor led the way with 12 points, while Anna Sielund had 11, and both Zhane Dikes and Rachel Howard chipped in with 10 points apiece.
San Diego will return to action on Thursday, as they hit the road for a showdown with league-leading BYU in a 6 p.m. WCC game, which will be aired live on BYUtv.
