TEMPE, Ariz. -- The USD softball team (1-2) lost to Maryland 13-9 in the second day of the Kajikawa Classic at Arizona State. After allowing eight runs in the first inning, the Toreros bounced back to score seven in the third, but ultimately couldn't slow down the Terps' bats.

Despite being down big early, the Torero bats rallied to close the deficit to one in the top of the third inning. After the leadoff batter struck out, Tatum Schultz and Taylor Spence had back-to-back singles. Kailey Hill then singled home Shultz, and Lauren Kane knocked in two more with a RBI single. Sarah Stone highlighted the inning with her first career home run, a three run bomb to left field.
Maryland quickly responded with a five run inning, extending the lead to 12-7. The Toreros would score one run in each of the next two innings. In the fourth inning, Kane continued her hot start with a RBI single, and in the fifth Schultz tallied a RBI single. Schultz is 8-for-11 with five extra base-hits through three games.
